We believe in the Holy Spirit, the giver of life (Genesis 2:7; 7:22; Job 27:3; Ezekiel 37:8–10; 1 Corinthians 15:45), the third person of the Trinity, who shares the same essence as the Father and the Son. We affirm that the Holy Spirit is fully God, possessing the same divine attributes, knowledge, and power as the Father and the Son. We deny that the Holy Spirit lacks anything that belongs to God (Isaiah 6:8–9 and Acts 28:25; Jeremiah 31:31 and Hebrews 10:15; Acts 5:3-4; 1 Corinthians 3:16 and 6:19; Ephesians 2:22). The Holy Spirit is co-equal (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 John 5:7; John 14:6 and 1 John 5:6), co-eternal (Genesis 1:2; Hebrews 9:14), and co-creator (Psalm 104:30) with the Father and the Son. We affirm that the Holy Spirit is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7), omnipotent (Zechariah 4:6), and omniscient (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:10–11), just as the Father and the Son are. We deny that the Holy Spirit is in any way lesser than the Father or the Son in deity, eternality, power, knowledge, or any other aspect. We also deny that the Holy Spirit has a will different from the Father’s or the Son’s (Hebrews 2:4) and reject the notion that the Holy Spirit is merely a servant to the Father or the Son. We firmly uphold that the Holy Spirit is uncreated and has existed with the Father and the Son from eternity (Hebrews 9:14).
We assert our belief that the Holy Spirit is a person, like the Father and the Son. We strongly deny that the Holy Spirit is merely a force, presence, angel, or the gifts bestowed on believers. As a person, the Holy Spirit has a will (Acts 13:2; 15:28; 1 Corinthians 12:11), emotions (Genesis 6:6; Psalm 78:40; Isaiah 63:10; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19), and intellect (Acts 5:3; Romans 8:27), all of which are fully aligned with those of the Father and the Son.
We firmly believe that the Holy Spirit is the one who inspired and spoke through all of Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20–21). We affirm that salvation cannot be obtained apart from the work of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3; 2 Corinthians 3:2–3; Ephesians 1:13–14). We also affirm that the Holy Spirit is the one who bestows different gifts on believers (1 Corinthians 12:4, 8–11). The fruit of the Spirit—produced through his work within the believer—is the ultimate sign of God’s indwelling in the believer’s heart (Galatians 5:22–23). We assert that the Holy Spirit teaches (John 14:26), guides (John 16:13), convicts (John 16:8), commands (Acts 8:29; 13:2; 16:6), intercedes for (Romans 8:26), and regenerates (Titus 3:5) believers. He also bears witness to Jesus, affirming that he is Lord (John 15:26; 16:14; 1 John 5:6; 1 Corinthians 12:3).
