Doctrinal Statement on the Person of Jesus Christ

The Divinity of Jesus Christ

We affirm that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of God the Father, the second person of the Trinity (Matthew 16:16-17; John 3:16; 1 John 4:14). He is co-equal and is of one and the same essence (Godhead) as God the Father (John 10:30; 17:21). He is begotten of the Father but is not created (Ps. 2:7). He is eternal, co-creator, co-enthroned, and reigns with his Father before the beginning of time and forever (John 1:1; 10:33). We deny that there was (or will be) a time when the Father existed without the Son (John 17:5, 24). We equally deny that there was (or will be) a time when the Father and the Son were separate, had different or conflicting wills, or acted independently of one another (John 5:19, 30; 8:28; 14:9-11). We deny that there was (or will be) a time when Jesus, the Son, did not know the will of his Father. We affirm that Jesus possesses the full knowledge of the Father. We strongly deny that there is anything the Father knows that the Son does not (Matthew 11:27; 28:18; Luke 10:22; John 3:35; 5:20). Jesus Christ is fully God with all of God’s perfections, authority, power, and knowledge (Isaiah 9:6; Colossians 2:9). We deny that Jesus Christ, during His life on earth, was less than God the Father in any respect or attribute (Phil. 2:6-8).

The Humanity of Jesus Christ

We strongly believe that Jesus Christ was fully human, possessing every attribute of human nature. He took on human nature in its fullness, just like any other human being (John 1:14; Romans 1:3; Galatians 4:4). Jesus was without sin, and his human nature was complete (John 8:46; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; 1 John 3:5).

The Nature of Jesus Christ

We assert that Jesus of Nazareth possesses two natures—divine and human (1 Timothy 3:16). In him, these two natures are united to form one person with a unified will, intellect, and action. While united in the person of Jesus, each nature retains its full attributes and properties. We uphold that while Jesus was on earth, he was capable of doing all that God can do (Matthew 8:13, 26-27; 12:8; Mark 2:5, 8-12) and all that man can do (Luke 24:39-43; John 4:7; 11:35; 19:28). We affirm that from the moment of conception, Jesus was fully man and fully God (Luke 1:31-32, 35, 43).

Jesus Christ was conceived and born of the Virgin Mary through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18, 20; Luke 1:34-35). We deny that Jesus was conceived by the seed of man or as a result of a human sexual relationship (Hebrews 7:3). We affirm that Mary was a virgin when Jesus was conceived and remained so until his birth (Matthew 1:25).
